What does New Thought believe about death?

New Thought is not a monolithic institution. Unlike the Catholic Church or other such "traditional" institutions. New Thought contains many different viewpoints regarding death.

One point of view is what might be termed the "Butterfly Hypothesis". This belief is that people are here on earth as part of a greater Spiritual Life cycle and that this life is similar to the caterpillar stage found in the order of Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies). When we have completed this life, death is our transition to awaken into our next stage. Proponents of this belief fall into two camps: one camp expounds that in the larval caterpillar stage, people must partake of as much life as possible to insure massive growth. The other camp espouses that it is important to make conscious choices while attaining spiritual growth at the larval stage. This camp believes that conscious living and choices are essential to attaining a proper consciousness at this stage and this will have an influence on the next stage.

Another point of view is called "Cycle Hypothesis" or teaching of the Bardos. This belief propounds that we are in a cycle of birth, death and rebirth.

DivineUnity New Thought teaches that life is eternal. As Teilhard de Chardin, we do not believe that we are human beings having a spiritual experience, but rather that "we are spiritual beings having a human experience." We accept that our physical bodies operate within a natural cycle of birth and death. However, even though we have a body, we are more than our body. We are the Life that animates our body, and that Life is infinite and immortal. As we become increasingly identified with our divine and eternal nature, our underlying fear of death dissolves and our experience of life becomes more joyous.

The energy that some call the soul encompasses more than just one life. The Divine Life is eternal and those who are awakened are unafraid of letting go of this life and moving to another life, for in truth they are all one life.
